Importance of Social Media for Photographers

Reach a Wider Audience

I don’t think I have to say much about the benefits of reaching to a wider audience on social media…

Create a brand

Branding is crucial for photographers as it helps them differentiate themselves in a highly competitive industry. By developing a distinct brand identity, photographers can communicate their unique style, approach, and values to potential clients. A well-defined brand can also help photographers build trust and credibility with their target audience, ultimately leading to more business opportunities. Additionally, branding allows photographers to establish a consistent and recognizable visual language across all their marketing materials, including their website, social media. This helps create a cohesive and memorable brand experience for clients and reinforces their trust in the photographer's professionalism and quality of work.

Showcase Your Work

Social media platforms are primarily visual, making them an ideal place for photographers to showcase their work. By posting high-quality images and videos, you can attract potential clients and showcase your skills as a photographer. You can also use social media to highlight your unique style and build your brand identity. Also, it is important to showcase personal projects alongside your client portfolio. Personal projects allow you to experiment with new techniques and styles, showcase your unique vision and creativity, and explore subjects that are important to you. They also give potential clients a glimpse into your personal interests and passions, which can help them connect with you on a deeper level. By showcasing your personal projects, you can demonstrate your versatility as a photographer and showcase your skills beyond just your client work.

Tips for Using Social Media as a Photographer

Forget Marketing…Make Good Content

Your favourite social media plaftorm does not like it when you do your marketing over regular posts. These platform wants you to pay them to boost ads, it’s a place of business. The worst part is, whatever the alghorithm does not like, it won’t get pushed. So the service price list you created for hours on Canva won’t get pushed to all of your followers. Instead, use your website, build a mailing list for those types of announcements and updates.

Focusing on creating great content is essential for photographers who want to stand out on social media. While marketing is important, creating quality content should be your primary goal. High-quality images and videos are what will attract potential clients and build your brand. If you focus solely on marketing and neglect your content, you risk losing followers and potential clients. By prioritizing content creation, you can establish yourself as a skilled photographer with a unique vision and style. This can lead to more business opportunities and a stronger community around your brand. Remember, your content should be consistent, authentic, and reflect your personal style and brand identity. By creating great content, you can build a strong following on social media and attract potential clients who appreciate your work.

Develop a Social Media Marketing Strategy

To make the most of social media, you need to have a clear strategy in place. This strategy should include your goals, target audience, content plan, and engagement plan. By having a clear plan, you can stay focused and consistent in your social media efforts, which can lead to better results.

For example;

Let’s say you’d love to work for automotive industry, and let’s say Mercedes in specific; find some of the local Mercedes dealerships on social media, engage with their content (at this point having some cool shots of Mercedes in your profile really helps) and clearly state that you are from that city on your profile bio.

That dealership likes your automotive content and you are local, at this point they could potentially think about you when there is a need for a photoshoot for new arrival vehicles, once you have done a shoot for them and an asset to them in time they may then extend your name to company level and from there you can imagine the things that could happen…or not, but it’s worth trying.

So having a strategy and deciding who you want to show your work to is important.

Take Good Care of Your Followers

We talked about not pushing marketing into people’s feed and instead making good content that markets your name and business. While creating amazing content that everyone loves keep in mind that engagement is critical on social media. By responding to comments and messages, you can build a relationship with your followers and potential clients. This can lead to more business opportunities and a stronger community around your brand.

Use Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories are a great way to showcase behind-the-scenes content and give your followers a glimpse into your creative process. You can use Stories to share sneak peeks of new work, highlight your unique style, and engage with your audience.

Fun facts about Instagram Stories;

  1. Instagram Stories have been found to increase user engagement on the platform, with studies showing that users spend an average of 28 minutes per day watching Stories.

  2. 58% of Instagram users say they have become more interested in a brand or product after seeing it in Instagram Stories.

  3. One-third of the most viewed Stories are from businesses, indicating that the feature is highly effective for marketing purposes.

Personally, I post on stories more than making actual posts. Stories work and they can be fun. If you have a fun lifestyle, you can even challenge yourself to storyboard your stories to do recaps of the fun things that you are going. Keep your stories interesting, show yourself and don’t be afraid to speak to your audience.

Overall, social media has become an essential tool for photographers to build their brand, expand their reach, and establish themselves as leaders in their industry. While it has many benefits to your business it is important to remember that the only way to get to where you want to get is by making content that stands out. The only shortcut is to know that there are short cuts. Make great content, provide value, build a community and see your business get inquiries.
